Upupidae (Hoopoes) has one Genus, Upupa and one species, Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops). One more species, Giant Hoopoe (Upupa anaios), that lived on the island of St Helena, has long been extinct. Earlier Upupidae was placed under the Coraciiformes order.

Hoopoes are widespread in Asia, Europe and parts of north Africa. They spend most of their time foraging on the ground.
